Subject: ATV Trail Closure

The entire Marinette County ATV Trail System will be closed to all vehicles effective immediately (March 13, 2012) until further notice. This closure is required to protect the soft trail bed from erosion damage caused by ATV’s and other vehicles during spring breakup. ATV trails will re-open when conditions warrant. Another press release will be placed in the paper when the trails are re-opened.

This looks like a great event..

This Saturday after the regular monthly meeting the Bear Point Sno-Cruisers will take to the trail ( or more likely the road) and head to the Wausaukee Bowl for pizza and pop. The club is buying, but if you want something else it is up to you.

The meeting starts at 9:30 at the bear Point Yacht Club. About 10:30 we will head out to Wausaukee Bowl for some fun, friends, and pizza. Join us if you can!

The season has not been good to us and we have very little snow cover. The trails are not open yet. We could use a big storm or two so fire up your best sno-dance. If it’s really good bring it to the pizza party for all to see!

So far the winter has not been very good to us. When I was in Crivitz yesterday there was very little snow, the ground is almost bare. It only gets a little better as you go north and west, I think that here in Silver Cliff I can measure maybe 2-3″ in the yard.

There are some riding opportunities out there though. You could take to the lakes, but be careful, the ice is behind where it normally is. Be sure that you know where you are riding, we have already had one snowmobile fatality in WI, and it was a guy riding on a river that hit open water.

Forest roads north and west of about Athelstane offer some relief. Early season rains and snows built up an ice base in sheltered and unplowed areas, and now with a couple of inches of snow on them, they could be a place to get a few miles in.

I got word this week the Lakewood, Townsend, Forest Co and Oneida Co are opening trails this week and weekend. They too have the ice base, and they saw about 4″ of snow from the last storm. With upper 30s for temperatures this week and all of the people really anxious to ride I am not sure how that will work out in the end.

All that I can say in that direction is that we need to get our best snow dance going, and hope for the best. We have missed a few weekends, but there is a lot of winter ahead yet.

Greetings and welcome!

Last Saturday we headed over to Bear Point for the Christmas Social that was held after the meeting. Thanks to me not advertising it until the day before there weren’t that many people there, mostly the usual suspects that make every meeting.

Nonetheless it was a nice time. A lot of people brought a dish to pass, and there  was hot ham, hot and cold potato salad, lots of deserts, and generally a lot of good food.

I made my rounds with the camera and caught 3 generations of Radtkes, Andy M with his hands full, change for a 10 Bear Point style, and Slug’s Red Solo Cup Christmas Tree.

The red Solo cup Christmas tree was another great idea from Slug.. For a donation of $5 or $10 you get to sign you name to a cup and put it back onto the tree. As of Saturday they had raised over $200 for the local food pantry. Outstanding!

Out back there were house sized sheets of ice floating down the river, occasionally crashing into each other or the shore. Eventually those will stack up and the river will freeze up, but it wasn’t last weekend.

I also came away with a couple of articles of interest that will be put up in a separate post (otherwise WordPress puts them into the slideshow).

Anyway, it was a very nice time, and thank you to the BPSC crew for their generosity with donations to my web site!
